We can thread - and have threaded - most types of pipe from ranging from ⅛" up through 6", including Schedule 40 (or thicker) - steel or aluminum (rigid, GRC, black pipe), IMC, PVC coated rigid - even PVC! The machines we use in our shop are the Wheeler-REX 6790 for ½" - 4", the Ridgid 535 for left-handed and right-handed bolt threads up to 2" & the Collins/Rothenberger/Greenlee* 22A for ½" - 2". The 22A is a nice threader that features automatic pipe chucking and higher rpm.
* Depends on the vintage of the machine - Collins was bought by Rothenberger who was then bought by Greenlee...)
About Our Threading Service:
A nipple consists of two threads as well as the pipe itself.
We keep a limited amount of pipe on hand and are happy to sell it at if needed. However, most contractors get better pricing on pipe than we do. We recommend buying your pipe from a local distributor and having them drop it off to us. Alternatively, you can replace our pipe when you pick up your completed order. Either way saves you a trip!
The "standard" thread length (STL) is between ¾” - 1¾”, depending on the size of the pipe. If additional length is needed in excess of the standard length, it will be charged in STL increments.
If a job requires the use of a hand threader, such as the Ridgid 12R or 700, or a geared threader, such as the Ridgid 141 or 161, due to an obstruction or a bend, pricing must be quoted on a per-job basis.
If anything other than a standard electrical fitting, such as a tapered NPT fitting, is going to be used on the threads we cut, we strongly recommend bringing us a sample of the fitting or we cannot guarantee a fit.
Prices listed are for reference only and subject to change without notice. Any prices quoted in writing are good for 30 days unless otherwise noted.
Things To Keep In Mind...
All jobs are scheduled and on a first come, first served basis.
Occasionally, if our schedule permits, we can interrupt the schedule and perform a while-you-wait service for an additional 50% charge. All such interruptions MUST be arranged in advance!
Materials other than steel: If the material is anything other than steel, please call ahead to discuss your requirements.
Aluminum (ARC): There are not really any special considerations for aluminum rigid conduit. However, please keep in mind that our equipment must hold on to the pipe very firmly and will usually leave marks in aluminum pipe. Pricing will usually follow our standard schedule.
PVC Coated Rigid (PGRC): Most PGRC threads threads fine but, as with aluminum, keep in mind that the jaws of the threader will usually mark and puncture the PVC coating - occasionally including some tearing - and must be touched up before being installed. This is normal and unavoidable. (There are some brands of PGRC that are considerably more likely to tear than others.) Pricing will usually follow our standard schedule.
Stainless Steel: We do not have dies for stainless steel as part of our normal equipment set. We can still do a limited amount of threading in S/S by previous arrangement. For larger S/S jobs, we can obtain special S/S dies at the customer's expense, which will lower the per-end threading cost to our standard rates. All pricing must be quoted on a per-job basis.
PVC: PVC is not generally intended to be threaded. The larger the diameter, the more it tends to deform during the threading process. However, it is possible. We will be happy to attempt to thread your PVC but will not guarantee success and will not be responsible for any damaged material. All pricing must be quoted on a per-job basis.
We cannot be liable for problems with pipe which are caused by material inconsistencies or over/under-sized pipe. These are manufacturer quality control problems and should be taken up with your supplier.
If you do not care for the pricing on our threading service, we will be happy to rent you the equipment necessary to perform the job.

Pipe
Threading, Cutting, Cut-Grooving & Beveling

Did you know...
...that the words "pipe" and "conduit" mean exactly the same thing? They both describe a hollow cylindrical tube who's dimensions - diameter, wall thickness & tolerances - are described by a schedule. The size is based on the inside diameter. So, thin-wall (EMT - Electrical Metallic Tubing) is conduit, but then again, so is rigid (GRC - Galvanized Rigid Conduit) Look it up: wikipedia.org...
...that in electrical applications, the male threaded ends of pipe and fittings are generally NPT, (National Pipe Thread) but the female threaded fittings are generally NPSM (National Pipe Straight Mechanical) or straight threads? The biggest exception being for water-tight applications which use NPT for both. This greatly speeds up the installation of pipe! Really. Next time you buy a piece of pipe, take off the coupler and see for yourself!
...NPT threads have a 60° included angle and use the Sellers thread form (flattened peaks and valleys). If you really want to know more about threads, a definitive source of information is the American Machinists' Handbook, 2nd edition.
